SCHOOL
AND CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE
School-Wide
Approach to Positive Discipline
Seven
key components have been identified as critical to positive student
conduct. Using an audit questionnaire, members of the staff assess how
effectively each of these is being addressed within their schools. This
workshop is particularly important for Heads, Principals, and others in
school leadership positions. During the session, participants learn how
to create a comprehensive school plan to address student conduct.
Bullying: Concerns, Causes, and Consequences
Much
good research on bullying has been done in Scandinavia, Britain, and
Canada. In many cases, schools are not applying this new knowledge in a
systematic and thoughtful way. Participants in this session will learn
how to pick up signs of bullying, how to create safer schools, and how
to educate young people about this type of negative behaviour. Reference
will be made to the British Anti-Bullying Project.
Classroom
Strategies that Work
Many
teachers try to handle today's students using strategies that worked
effectively when they were in school. Unfortunately, the influence of
media and changing social expectations mean that teachers must learn new
ways of influencing student behaviour. In this session, they will learn
practical many strategies and gain an new sense of professional
confidence.
Dealing
with the Violent Student
By
and large, teacher training did not prepare us to deal with highly
disruptive students. This session will focus on the identification of
the types of students who are potentially violent and will suggest ways
to both contain and modify their behaviour. Reference will be made to
the Ontario Violence-Free Schools Policy.
