EDUCATIONAL REFORM
Public Education: A Matter of Survival
Pressures of 'downsizing', 'restructuring' and 'market
forces' are threatening the existence of fair and effective public
education in many countries. This workshop will look at the forces
shaping the economic agenda during this period of increased
globalisation. How can we work to keep the focus on Education for All?
Leadership
in Challenging Times
Today,
school administrators face a variety of staff morale, curriculum
implementation, and organisational challenges. During this session, the
role of the leader during times of educational reform will be discussed.
Reference will be made to professional accountability and moral
leadership.
Outcome-based
Curriculum: Accountability in the Nineties
The
shift in emphasis from what teachers teach to what students learn is a
key feature of the modern curricula used in many countries. This
workshop will look at learning outcomes and the related issues of
accessibility and accountability. How does the teacher use a common
curriculum to plan instruction? Why is curriculum integration a feature
of outcome-based learning?
Assessing
Student Achievement
This
workshop will look at 'traditional' and 'authentic' assessment in the
contemporary class room. Attention will be paid to the tracking of
student achievement and to the pros and cons of 'standardised' measures.
Adolescent
intelligence: Not An Oxymoron!
Research
on intelligence and learning must govern how we teach and assess
students. But does it? This workshop will bring current research on
intelligence into the classrooms in a practical way. Teachers will gain
strategies to enhance the performance of all students in their
classrooms.
Meeting
Individual Needs in the Classroom
Canada
has the highest inclusion rate in the world of students in regular
schools and classrooms. The diversity of learning styles, deficits, and
disabilities can be overwhelming. How can the teacher trained in 'whole
class' instruction cope with such a range of student needs? This
workshop will focus on this issue and provide practical strategies to
classroom teachers.
